  2. It was a cool ride, but I'd rather have had visibility and no rain Today, woke up a little too hungover, had a proper breakfast to try and wash out all the booze, and got on the road. Was pretty happy to not have rain again, but 5 minutes into it and stopped to put my plastic jacket on. It then drizzled for the next couple of hours, when I stopped for some water and a rest at the Alqueva artificial lake. Sun was now coming out so I put the pesky plastic jacket back on the case. Entering Algarve Made it to Faro a little ago, am getting ready to go and have a dip in the ocean. Bike is filthy from all this rain and dust and the Pirellis have a nice scrub to them, they're useless offroad but that's to be expected really.

  4. Not a ride report as it didn't really go well yesterday. I got stung on the bridge of my nose after 10 minutes by an errant wasp and then just couldn't get into the swing of things. Nearly missed a couple of corners by entering too fast and then nearly got rammed by an angry Transit van driver after a twat in a caravan demolised part of the wall outside his house (the van driver cam after him and I was inbetween them ). This morning my eye has swelled up like I've been punched but on the upside I've been excused shopping, Ersilia has gone to do that. Anyway, I took a couple of photos..................

  6. Didn't feel like taking a lot of pictures today, rode a lot leaving home around 9AM, stopping for a coffee, then stopping for a quick sandwich lunch, then stopping about an hour for an afternoon coffee, and then stopping around 7PM, so a pretty good day. Douro river: Lunch stop, near where the Tua river joins the Douro: Tua river below:, some great roads in this little corner of Portugal, if you like great roads. At Miranda do Douro, taken on the Spanish side, Portugal on the other bank: Plan was to sleep there, and have some of the great local typical steaks for dinner, but it was sort of too early, the place was crowded with spaniards and immigrants, just too many people and I started to get Covid itches, so moved on and rode another couple of hours till where I was going to sleep. Crossed the Douro to Spain and slept 200 meters into Spain. Behind my "house" and on the other side of the river is Penedo Durão, from where Sofia took her great pictures. Cracked open a beer after a shower, and prepared for dinner Dinner was fried calamari (or squid), and a dish of huevos rotos, which means fried potatoes with ham and fried eggs. Post dinner beer, and retired to bed while being mauled by mosquitoes. today, woke up to this: Had breakfast, went to fuel up the bike, which took forever because there were two tractors in front of me, and made it to Penedo Durão by 08:40, it's great when you sleep in spain because you get up at the normal time and gain an hour as soon as you get back to Portugal. It helped that I had no internet yesterday, and went to sleep early. Between this viewpoint and the river is the N221, and the 25km from Freixo de Espada à Cinta heading South are some of the coolest twisties I know. Headed to Serra da Estrela, to go past continental Portugal's highest peak on the way South. Getting close to there stopped to put my plastic rain suit on, just in time for a proper downfall. Tried an alternate route up the hill and discovered a pretty cool but of forest road. Very slippery in the rain, though, the moss growing on the tarmac didn't help. Got wetter and turned to dirt as I went past the tree line: This is at over 1900 meters altitude, there is a great view here, you'll just have to imagine: From then on it wasn't even worth taking the phone out for pictures, too much rain, too much fog and a lot of wind. Went down the other side of the mountain hoping to find better weather only for it to get worse. Visibility was so poor I didn't feel comfortable going more than 50kmh. After most of the mountain, first sign of light: Decided I felt like some warmth so engaged mach 5 and hightailed it to Alentejo via some cool twisties, got to the hotel in time for a nice dip in the swimming pool, with a castle view. Now chilling a little bit, before going to dinner, I'm proper hungry since I didn't have anything since breakfast.

  10. Mines are feckin' everywhere. Good for me as the old roads make for great riding....

  11. All of those yellow dirt piles in the hills are mine locations. The dirt is the tailings from the mine. Lots of open shafts in the area making it pretty dangerous to just walking around...

  12. Old gold mine ore loading area. The ore went down the chute and into horse drawn wagons for transport to the stamping mills in town...

  17. I wore Shoei for about 25 years......but AFAIC they've priced themselves out of the reckoning now. Four years ago I got a HJC (which are apparently based on the Shoei head shape) and that does the job at less than half the price.

  24. In case the above link isn't available you damned foreigners, here's a copy and paste: CENTRAL CITY DISTRICT The Central City district is along the southern border of Gilpin County in the vicinity of the towns of Central City and Blackhawk. This district is the northern segment of the rich chain of ore deposits between Central City and Idaho Springs. Both the mining history and geological setting of Idaho Springs and Central City are so entwined that they are considered an entity and are discussed together in the Clear Creek County section of this report (p. 96). The production of the Central City district rightfully belongs under the Gilpin County heading. The district is credited with 95 to 99 percent of the $84,114,389 worth of gold mined in the county through 1923 (P. K. Sims, oral commun, 1959). Total gold production through 1959 was about 4,200,000 ounces; all but about 30,000 ounces was from lode mines. NORTHERN GILPIN DISTRICT The Northern Gilpin district lies north of North Clear Creek in the central part of the county and extends north to the Boulder County line. The most important mines are just south of Apex and in the vicinity of Gilpin. Gold was first discovered in the district in June 1859 in Gamble Gulch in the Perigo area, and lodes in both the Dirt and Perigo mines were discovered in 1860 (Bastin and Hill, 1917, p. 68, 197-198). Some of the ore was very rich near the surface, and within a short time 10 or 12 stamp mills were operating (Henderson, 1926, p. 31). However, the rich and easily worked ore was soon exhausted and in 1867 only four or five companies were still operating in the district. After 1868 the camp was almost deserted until 1879 when the Perigo mine again became active and continued activity at least until 1888. The district was revived briefly during the 1930's, but from 1943 through 1959 very little activity was reported. There was some placer mining near Rollinsville in 1897 (Henderson, 1926, p. 31). Many of the gulches in the district have placer ground, but production was small until 1937-39, when dredging operations along South Boulder Creek recovered 7,724 ounces of gold. Though the early production is unknown, it was probably small, and the total amount of gold mined in the district through 1959 was probably 35,000 ounces. The bedrock of the district is a complex of Pre-cambrian rocks, comprising schist of the Idaho Springs Formation and quartz monzonite gneiss, cut by Boulder Creek Granite and by quartz diorite. The Precambrian rocks are intruded by irregular stocks and dikes of quartz monzonite porphyry and dikes of bostonite porphyry of Tertiary age. The ore deposits are pyritic gold veins in fractures, most of which trend northeast; a few strike west or northwest. The primary ores are in general low grade and contain less than half an ounce of gold and 1 ounce or less of silver to the ton, but some veins have higher grade ore in the supergene-enriched upper parts. Many of the deposits are discontinuous lodes along shear zones that carry pyrite disseminated through several feet of sheared rock; however, fissure fillings are more abundant. Besides pyrite the ore contains variable amounts of chalcopyrite and locally, some galena and sphalerite. Quartz is the common gangue mineral in the veins (Lovering and Goddard, 1950, p. 193-194).

  25. The whole county that I live in was a gold mining region. Quite a bit was mined and is still being mined by modern facilities in the area. I've never seen any in the wild though? edit: Apparently it was $85 million worth. See: https://westernmininghistory.com/articles/63/page2/

  33. I used to go through the golf club in my mountainbike when was a kid, they didn’t like that. It’s the oldest golf club in continental Europe, it’s got some history, so when I got the XR a few year ago someone might have left them a little roost trail ...
