To not incur in @boboneleg's rath, I´ll post a few words this today's ride. I had a proper day's riding today, left the hotel at around 9 and headed south to the Algarve, rode through country and mountain roads, mostly small roads. It was a little chilly in the morning up to about 10 or 11AM, but as soon as I approached Monsaraz it got hot, from then on temperatures ranged between 31 to 35, it felt hotter than that though and when it got to 31 it felt cool by comparison I was in a better mood today, so stopped to take a few pictures First, storks' nests on top of telephone poles, they usually fly away when you stop nearby but managed to catch a couple: Half an hour later, stopped to send emails, and had my morning expresso in Estremoz: The full face modern helmet surprised me, and warranted a picture They say the Alentejo is big, and it sort of is for Portugal size, but I'd love it to be the size of Texas, I could ride around this for days: Warning, this thread is about to get flooded with pictures of my bike next to an Oak Tree Alentejo traffic jam, this went on for a few minutes while they figured out how to balance the panels on one single strap First sight of the Alqueva lake, from the Monsaraz Castle And a stop for lunch a snack and refreshments, it was getting warm now, so I found a nice shady spot to park And the day turned amazing, center and northern Portugal got rainy weather today: There are worse places to park for a phone call And then, near Serpa, I took a little detour from the road just for @XTreme's delection, this is an abandoned train station, so abandoned they already took the tracks away a long time ago, and it´s for sale! I am sure Pete would be up these with a puppy like excitement, but I didn't really feel the urge to it And made way, further on after a few great twisties I again got off the road to go and see a menhir. After a couple kms of loose shale dirt road I got pretty disappointed at the sight of this, they're smaller than they appear to be on the picture, the fence was just a little taller than me I didn't feel like walking to the other one, drank some more water and rode on to the Algarve hills Brief dirt road excursion in search of a great view, not very photogenic What followed was 2 hours of very twisty roads over the Algarve hills, no pictures of that unless the tires showing signs of an afternoon well spent after I got home. Searching for a decent meal in Faro proved hard, the local supermarket was already closed, a lot of places went under last year because of covid, a few of them also close on mondays, and I didn't like the crowds on the ones that were open, so uber eats came to the rescue and a pizza was had. I had a proper motorcycling day today, rode at my own pace which meant sometimes cruising admiring the scenery at very slow speeds, as well as enjoying the twisties. Tomorrow, it's going to be a little work and then a short ride to the local beach.5 points

Thanks! And as you know, it's worse when you have to make that call. In our case the tests all showed organs failing and she only had a couple of weeks at most........so we couldn't let her suffer!4 points

No more for us either....we're too old to exercise them properly. And the wife's osteoarthritis limits her mobility these days. We're down to 1 Dog, I duck (who's 15), 2 tortoises, and the 2 horses.2 points

I did give my last one a whopping dose of tramadol as she was shuffling off and her saucer sized pupils were smiling on her way out which was nice. Sadly dont have anymore of that now frowned on opiate (left over from Mr Slowlys shoulder op) so the next two wont have that pleasure.2 points

@gymwitch that is a pain I understand far better than I want to, gone from five dogs to two in the last 18 months, you have all the sympathy I can send. Loathe as we are to say it out loud our dogs mean more to most of us than some of the relatives in our lives and that grief is hard. apparently thats the hug emoji which needs explanation unless the idea of jazz hands might make you smile a tiny bit?2 points

Ive used my CRF250 Rally to got to France twice, the first time I only used it as my DR650 was out of commision. I thought it would be underpowered but absolutey not, stick to the side roads and trails and it's bloody ace. Those sort of roads are soooooooo much better that route national or autoroutes in France anyway, there is so much more to see. I wouldn't hesistate to use it to ride to Spain or Italy.1 point

An entertaining covid story- school children have discovered orange juice gives a false positive on a covid test so guess what the little monkeys have been doing when they want to stay at home1 point

Well that is sort of true. The vaccination gives your body’s immune system a memory of what the unwanted virus looks like so when the real deal turns up your immune systems bouncers are ready to go. A side effect of this in people with a reasonable immune response is the virus is wiped out before it gets a hold or to the shedding stage which is where you are shedding diseased cells and can infect other people. The shedding timing is different in different diseases. So by their very nature all immunisations cut down on disease transmission. This is how the herd immunity effect works, it helps to protect the unvaccinated because it becomes difficult for the virus to transmit and that gives protection to the morons who dont want to get vaccinated. So yes someone can have a vaccination and still catch a disease and pass it on its just at a vastly reduced rate. Its not something they want to broadcast at the moment because its not useful for compliance with mask wearing or crowd control before they have enough people jabbed.1 point

Yes. Infection rates are rising but hospitalisation and deaths currently arent increasing at the same rate which is the key factor. Getting a mild illness that requires no intervention and causes no long term disability is the key.1 point

Infection rates will rise but have the death rates risen, you can test positive after having two jabs but are less likely to die is this what we are seeing now ?1 point
