  2. I'm working on building a metal version of the chain guard off of an alleged pre-war prototype Ducati that was found in a barn after someone's grandfather died. He was married to an Italian woman he called "Fantsasma" who was related to or maybe dating the guy who had Taglioni's job before Taglioni did so it was probably stolen or at least hidden by someone she knew before the factory got bombed. The grandpa died before I was born so I can't ask about details. Rumor has it Ducati was working on a big single before the war broke out, but got distracted by bombs going off and stuff. When the war ended there wasn't a market for a big single so they started out producing smaller bikes, then broke out the old drawings and got back to the bigger singles later on. Of course by then a hard tail wouldn't sell so it had a rear suspension when it reached production, but you can see the similarities between it and the production bikes. Obviously being a prototype a lot of the original parts are unobtainable, so I've used later parts where they fit and fabricated details and parts where nothing was available. No color pictures exist of the bike so it's anyone's guess how it might have looked if it had ever been built. In fact not much info at all exists on the bike, so a lot of what is being said is open to conjecture. Another opinion is it's a bike that started life as a joke but that's just crazy talk. Who in the hell would start building a bike just because someone offered him a free, damaged frame after he joked he had almost enough spare parts to build a counterpoint to the over sized, under braked, over priced choppers that were so popular in the US for a few minutes back in the day? That's just stupid. No one would do THAT. Pre-war prototype is the only thing that makes sense.

  4. Got the clutch out of the XR tonight, i think it has been a little warm at some point comparing it to the new parts. Oddly enough everything is all within spec but it was riding when i started pushing on a bit The clutch change is a 10 minute job if i do it the correct way as there is a small cover to take off on the crankcase cover specifically for changing the clutch plates but i wanted to check the gauze filter in the sump, all clean as it has always been

  11. Didn't really feel like waking up too early because I would be taking mostly very twisty roads on the Algarvian hills and there must be a lot of frost from overnight. Walking to breakfast I check out the bike and it's pretty dry (blessed Algarve weather) except the seat, the little grooves on the seat were filled with frost and started to show when scratched. This is very barbaric, one does not sit on ice wearing jeans, that's not a good way to start the day! After a nice breakfast of fruit and a fresh cheese sandwich with orange juice, the nice lady provided me with kitchen paper to tend to the seat. All nice and dry I head out with the sun on my back on a blue sky sharp morning. Didn't go more than a few kms before the first stop, just for you guys. This is a Casa de Cantoneiros (House of Roadmen), back in the day teams of guys in charge of keeping roads in good condition used to stay in these. This is a very nice example of one that's been renovated maintaining the original looks, a lot of them are abandoned and neglected on the side of the road. Like I said, my favourite stretch of the N2: As I go onto the hills it doesn't get warmer The Algarve you don't see on tourism brochures, now sadly being discovered by journalists on motorcycle launches, I had it all to myself today, and saw no motorcycles and hardly any cars on the road until late in the morning A little past 11AM I'm on the Monchique hilltop: the cafe is closed so no chance of the expresso I was dreaming of, the wind is immense and bitterly cold, and there's a crowd of french guys on dirtbikes. I feel colder standing there than riding the bike, but the sky is clear and the ocean in the distance is shining so bright that I go for a little climb on some rocks to get a better view. This is near Sagres and the edge of Portugal and Europe, on the previous pictures you're looking at the south shore, on the following picture towards the west. From the top of the hill, after 15 or 20 minutes of very steep narrow roads I'm heading west on a nice fast road, now heading to my favourite location on this shore to say hello to the place, and then Sagres. First, a work stop sitting on a picnic table on the Atlantic forest. Fields don't look like we're in December My favourite stop on this coast, at the end of a short dirt road near Vila do Bispo. It was a beautiful day to be here Following a short 6 or 8 km dirt road, and a few kms of tarmac that showed that millennials can't drive while filming instagram clips holding their phones out the window to document how great van life is, I find a closed lighthouse and move on to find a place to eat something while deciding where to go. I enjoyed the very forgettable burger made special by the great humor of the two brazilian ladies running the ple and the homemade garlic mayonnaise, plenty good enough for a lunch snack at 15:00 on a cold day. I didn't feel like staying around in the Algarve in the cold and hadn't been home in a long while, so just had a coffee, jumped on the bike and a little after sunset I was getting home. Good bimble!

  17. Done some internet searching and according to several academic publications and learned journals there’s a good reason for it. Here’s why racers do it; “Dangling your leg into this high-speed airstream results in a significant force on the rider's leg as it acts like a small parachute, creating a turning moment by pulling the riders leg around his core. This in turn encourages a pull on the outside handlebar, further helping to turn the bike through counter-steering” …….and here’s why non-racers do it; “They are cunts” ……so it must be true

  20. Cold and sunny today which is perfect in the mountains. Got out and ski’d atrociously leading to the dubious pleasure of a providing the entertainment, a double somersault with ski’s still attached (bindings too tight) then sliding down the mountain sprawled upside down like a starfish.. style and grace personified. Reasting my bashed up self with a vin chaud like a lightweight Quirky little pub with no windows we had a bit of apres at yesterday. The largest bellows I’ve ever seen. Back now for fine wine and another 4 course meal, just call me Mrs Creosote. Soup with a lump of what I think is Gruyère that you break into chunks into the soup, yum

  25. So this is it Fred. Years ago we were on our way to the Dragon Rally when I had a whoopsee ........... After I had picked myself up and Fred realised I was missing he returned and helped get the bike out of the fence. I sat down feeling sorry for myself while Fred assessed the damage, the only problem was the gear lever which was pointing at a funny angle, Fred sorted it out for me while I hobbled around and we continued on. The gearchange still didn't quite feel right and when I got home after the weekend I saw that the gear lever shaft was bent on the tip. I managed to find a replacement part on eBay and fitted it later on but it was a bit of a twat as you had to take the clutch out and then pull the shaft out from the other side of the case but it didn't want to come out easily because of the bent tip. Anyway, I did it eventually and all was good again.

  40. One of my neighbours when I lived in the UK was a domestic plumber, but he only worked on new builds. Absolutely refused to work on anything else. He'd drive halfway across the country to a new build rather than work in an occupied house! My brother used to work for the building maintenance for a housing association. He hated having to work in occupied houses. Renovating "voids" was his favourite, especially ripping out old kitchens and heating systems to fit new ones. Somehow the old copper piping found its way into his van!

  43. Well i got one. When i fitted my new boiler a few years ago i only had the old copper pipe for the pressure relief valve going through the wall so i used it for the condense drain from the new boiler with all intensions to change it at a later date. When i came home from work last night i spotted a stain on the ceiling below the cupboard the boiler is in. When i went upstairs to have a look the floor in the boiler cupboard was soaking the pipe had frozen and the condense was now dripping all over it, so i spent last night putting trace heating on the pipe as once it leaves the house it runs about 3m across my kitchen extension roof to the gutter. Got home tonight all the ice has gone but water is still dripping in the bucket below the boiler i found there was a split in the pipe but couldn't understand how it froze inside the house and split. I cut it out and replaced the split bit of pipe and after reconnecting discovered its still leaking, on closer inspection the pipe hadn't split due to being frozen the condense is acidic and had eaten the pipe away along its length so i taped it up with some self amalgamating tape until i can drill the wall of the house to put the right pipe in this is the bit i cut out
