  3. It exists, Wiesmann: It’s a really cool coachbuilder in Germany and it’s so cool everyone on the BMW board drives one. The ones powered by an S54 and manual box are dreamy, nazis have great taste is cars!

  4. Today I have been mostly taking up our rotten old decking. It was becoming dangerous so had to go plus the plan is to build a decent sized bike storage shed and a smaller deck or patio to sit out on during the good weather. Rain stopped play but a start has been made. The only thing that has survived is some stainless screws. Did I mention I hate doing this sort of stuff

  11. So, update on the mighty GS. Clutch rattle. Following clutch rattle and no clutch issue being obvious, an updated gearbox bearing kit was ordered, taking apart the gearbox to get it ready for the bearing kit, a flaw was noticed on one of the sprockets on the gearbox's output shaft. Taken apart, and no replacement found in the neighboring dealerships amongst loose parts, a replacement was ordered. Since then, we took the change to inspect timing chains and tensioners, to be replaced, and since were at it the cylinder heads came off to do it. Since they're off to do it, let's take them apart and decarbonize the heads (don't know how to say it in english apart from clean them up), turning valves and make it extra nice with a little polish here and there. We're now on a little bit of a creeper mission, BMW has made it longer with nothing ever being in stock. Everything was supposed to be ready for assembly today, but my guy took a little longer on one head than was expected as the exhaust valves were needing extra work, I suppose a lot of Moroccan fuel might have something to do with it. I'm counting on a little bit faster and stronger engine after all is done, ready to go into the 200.000kms with confidence. Watch this space. I would have paid my bike a few visits over the last few weeks, but with Costa the puppy being so sick he has (and always will) taken priority. He's doing better than two days ago, jumped out of human beds yesterday night after farting on them mid sleep, today peed against things holding a rear leg up, and barked at the scent of an enemy dog he didn't see but smelt, all progress!

  12. Thanks, it's so sad that they have such short lives. He passed away in my arms last Monday but I keep expecting to see him come into the room, and then I remember. I still get broken up about it. I hope yours gives you many more years of love.

  13. Had another play with the 3 wheeled BMW thing today. They've been trying to start it with out success. I get there and I can see petrol dripping out of an exhaust joint where the front pipes meet the silencer. Flooded I suspect. It seems the previous owner, who put it together, had a petrol tank leak and opted for one of these tank sealing kits. Don't think it got on to well with our new petrol as it seems to have softened again and gone through the whole system gumming up the injectors as they now drip with out power. Then back to the shed. Still trying to get that bloody shock to bits and make a throttle/oil pump cable out of the old one and a new which as usual was nothing like the original.

  17. Yeah I grew up in a bangernomics household. My Dad always bought crap cars but always managed to keep them going until they practically dissolved. It was only in his 50's that he actually bought some decent cars as he just couldn't be arsed with make do and mend anymore. Plus things were getting more and more complicated. I'm afraid that's where I am now, I don't want a project bike ever again I just want to press the button and ride. I don't mind servicing but that's about it now.

  19. Only thing I regret is not having had the shocks sent for refurbishment when the bike was stopped, that would have saved the next lay over in a year or two, but who was to know it was a going to take so long (including the dude going through the flu), but maybe I'll have a talk to an Ohlins guy and see about a replacement for the Touratech shocks I have been told sell for good money online.

  20. I bought it initially as it was cheap, but its really grown on me, it will never be a fast bike, but then again that's not the plan. The plan is fun and enjoyment and it does all that for me.

  23. In the 1960,s, and 1970,s, in the era of crap engines, crap petrol and inefficient ignition systems a De Coke was almost basis maintenance. My dad did his cars at 50,000 miles, took the head off, De Coke the head and valves too, and lap them in again, and clean the piston crowns, but on those cars it was easy to do, and only took a couple of hours to complete.

  27. It's not a complete over haul, it's had the timing chain replaced and valves turned and head cleaned. The bottom end is untouched, which in a boxer engine is the middle end? The gearbox bearings and stuff: I'll take the fault for that, using it off-road while sometimes downshifting like on a motocross bike with no clutch, and in heat and heavy dust and moroccan silt All in all, it has led a hard life, between difficult fuel, hard use in dusty and hot conditions, etc. But it'll be back for more, I love that bike. The thing is, considering what motorcycling has done to my mental health over the last 6 years, riding this bike has probably saved my life. It's been more than a therapist, so I want it alive and well and ready for more. It'll see 200, 300 or 400.000km, as it won't be with me until I stop.

  32. This morning I went for my flu jab and thought I would take a run out on the bike afterwards, the plan was to go up to the Lammermuir hills. It was overcast but dry and a bit chilly, I think it is time to put the leather away and switch to the cold weather gear as it was on the edge of being too cold even with the jacket liner in. Unfortunately the main road over the hills was closed so I was forced to take a detour, I ended up on a single track road that was quite muddy in places but did take me past a nice farm shop that had good tea for £2.50 a cup. Based on my sense of direction I was convinced the road would eventually lead me to Whiteadder reservoir (pronounced “wittadder”). The road was definitely a sports bike killer, too many switch backs with steep climbs out and bends with sheer drops to the sides. No problem for the superior Harley though. I had to use the passing points a lot. The roads were damp from what I suspect was fog the previous night but the Scottish countryside didn’t fail to impress. The bike as always complimented the amazing countryside. As I headed past Cranshaws I saw a Golden Eagle, a very rare site, it was huge, unfortunately I was riding at the time and it was away by the time I stopped although I did catch some migrating birds. I made my way down and across to the A1 near Berwick upon Tweed and headed back to Edinburgh. Just under a hundred miles, a good bit of two wheeled therapy.

  33. Just a quick hello from me. I have been riding for many years, started off in the late 70's with the usual 50cc rockets I then moved away from bikes for a few years and returned back in 2005 or so when I passed my bike test. I've ridden mainly roads but had a brief foray into green laning with a DRZ400, that ended with a badly broken shoulder and a DRZ up for sale. I have had numerous bikes ZZR600, 1100 and a very brief stint with a 1400, Triumph Speed triple 1050, Honda CBR etc etc Mainly mundane stuff. I retired a few years ago and then my marriage broke down so now living alone my thoughts turned to bikes again. I bought an old (2002) vintage BMW F650GS. I then set off on a camping trip around my home country of Ireland ( I currently live in the uk) I got off the ferry in Dublin and turned right and followed the entire coastline arriving back in Dublin having covered around 2700 miles. I'm now putting the final touches to my next ride out which is France, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco which i hope to be on my way within the next couple of weeks. I plan to spend Christmas in Portugal, then travel across to Morocco in the new year. The attached photo was the bike when I bought it. I have changed some things but overall I'm happy with the bike, we are happy plodding along together. So hello.

  35. Thanks for the offer, my plan is basically no plan, just ride and see where it gets me, I don't have a time frame nor indeed a return ticket so I can do what I please. I'm camping all the way, well as much as I can, Yes I'm packing for the cold and well as the slightly warmer weather but also not overpacking stuff. I have a few bit and pieces arriving in the next week to make the bike a little more user friendly and relaiable, but I love it.

  38. Welcome! Now that's an introduction! I'm Portuguese, and I've been to Morocco a few times. If you feel like you're in need of guidance to settle on a route feel free to ask, although my advice is to play it by ear. Christmas in Portugal is usually a nice time to be on a motorcycle as if it's cold and dry it's beautiful and not so cold, but January in Morocco you´ll maybe face proper weather and proper cold if you go through mountains, it'll also get chilly in the desert. I aprove on your choice of motorcycle!
