  4. Yep heated vests are amazing. As are ski mobile suits and coldstore gear (which is considerably cheaper than a ski mobile suit. Just size up n put it over your usual gear. I have some very pricey thermal lined padded out trousers and they are ok but not as good as the ski mobile suit. Anything labelled up for more than -30 is good.

  8. I had a latte last week. First cup of coffee I’ve had in years. I was shocked at how disgusting it was. It’s so strongly flavoured there’s no way you can drink that stuff without it effecting your taste buds. Bit like smoking.
  9. Now that looks great. It’s funny one of the things I was concerned about you giving up your home for hobo life was you would miss baking too much and it would make you a bit sad. So I’m very happy to see that cake!
  10. No it would not weaken your immune system. Quite the opposite. All vaccines strengthen the immune system as it’s the same as being exposed to a virus. There are different ways for a vaccine to work but essentially you’re taking something that’s the same shape as the virus with the nasty kill you bit removed. Your immune system fights it as it would the real thing without you having the symptoms. Then if the real thing shows up later your immune symptoms recognises it immediately and goes “hey arsehole we told you last time you’re barred” and shows it the door sharpish before it can smash the place up. Job done.

  12. I don’t know I doubt it. They’d have to eat so much volume to get the calories they need they’d have to spend every hour eating. It’s not like they’re going to make it up with other fats or grow more calorific crops. Then again growing lettuce and carrots might prove tricky too
  13. There’s some very interesting research on Eskimo diets. They have a cultural resistance to some bacteria. But yes they do get food poisoning… and botulism from meat fermented inside seals buried under rocks for months. They suffer from diabetes and have an average lifespan of 60 so it depends what you consider ill wear! I’m not a vegan or anti meat eating. I just don’t presume meat or any particular food substance the key.

  15. Us too. A percentage of returns are free and they weren't being used due to lockdown which meant no fuel or vehicle costs. The emergency returns which are pricey (you want a document and you want it 10 minutes ago) are usually medical files and legal docs like Wills for solicitors which demand for went up. But those days are gone. I was talking to our pension advisor and he said the bounce back from Covid was excellent. He had peoples pots performing at 20% up and they stayed there. Then we had an outstandingly stupid 'mini budget' which wiped the entire 20% off. They ditched the stupidity and its regained 5% but thats it. Heyho.

Everyone quiet but still paying, no daily runs but the odd emergency return giving us permission to go out on a bike during lockdown on totally empty roads and bonus time with my eldest son who stayed at home for a year longer than planned. No obligation to see people I didn't really like spending time with and we had ridiculously good weather. I feel bad saying that when it was a genuinely terrible time for so many millions of people but for me it wasn't, well once we all got past the imminent death part!

  18. I don't think I've ever had that clocking off thing. Well not since I was about 16 years old! Even when I worked in a hospital we were starting a business so I'd come home to more work. There's always been a completely random immediacy that's meant we have to be always contactable, plans are so often changed by what's occurring I never believe I'm going anywhere to do anything until I'm actually there doing it and even then it can stop in a instant. The very next day after my wedding... back at work because something had happened. I accept that is price I pay for what affords me a lifestyle I mostly like but I can't imagine I'll ever get to experience clocking off. Sounds nice, I'd like to try it but I'm ok with the compromise so long as it involves motorbikes
  19. I might have told you this before I can't remember. I had a young lad come in for assessment wearing a scrum cap. It looked fairly ridiculous - smart shoes, chinos, polo shirt, scrum cap. He looked like a product of intensive upper class inbreeding where little Johnnys lack of genetic success meant mummy and daddy let him walk around in his rugby hat to keep him happy. But no he'd fallen through a warehouse roof and to accommodate the brain swelling they removed a piece of his skull and put it in his abdominal cavity for safe keeping until the swelling was reduced enough to put it back. The scrum cap was the surgeons suggestion to stop anything accidentally poking through into his brain. Some of these surgeons really do some very bold and impressive things. Surprisingly apart from shattering multiple bones at the time he showed no ill effects!

My kind of work I really enjoyed the first part but this not so much, the economy, the predictions about where we are heading and the increase workload we're currently experiencing as everyone jams on the brakes and looks to cut costs wherever they can is frightening. Our increase in workload isn't a good one, it's caused by fighting to hold onto customers after some disreputable company offers to do what we do but much cheaper - which they can't so they just lie to get the contract and increase the 'extra costs' after they've locked them in. I could go on but it's both painful and boring. I don't understand why you're never 100% on work when most people are? I find the flat out before I leave and a tiny bit everyday works very well. Hope it does for you. I can't remember did you get a back up phone in the end?

  22. There's no quick answer to that question. There is plenty of evidence that protein is excellent for cell repair. There is some evidence (although not enough for it to be widely accepted as fact) that raw meat is harder to digest than cooked as the process has already started to break down the collagen. Cooking foods does without doubt reduce the vitamin content but not by as much as people think. There are strong proponents of eating raw food (because the vitamin content is slightly higher) but those 'studies' tend to come from the fad diet, pseudoscience quack nutritionist end of the spectrum rather than any reliable scientific study. It is certainly true a healthy diet aids recovery simply because a poor diet tends to be lacking in essential nutrients, be high in fat, salt n sugar and highly processed with added 'ingredients' that are not good for you. When it comes to the power of the mind in recovery the body of evidence is vast. Many different studies show that if people feel they are doing something positive for their health (whatever it is) there's a demonstrable improvement compared to a control group. The placebo effect has an actual effect! So as crazy as it is if your Dad thought eating raw meat was helping him then it probably was! Personally I like meat barely cooked and love a blue steak but if you're not very careful food poisoning will be at you door. Particularly in America where chlorine dips after slaughter replace good husbandry. No idea know what Canada's food regulations are like though. Freezing does kill a lot of bacteria but I wouldn't risk eating it unless the supplier was trusted and considered it good enough to serve as tartare before freezing.
