Back to your bike choice, you should follow the advice given and buy used so you can see if you are going to be able to live with a particular sized bike before putting big money down, I don't think you would stay with a 400, you will pretty quickly find yourself wanting a 600 or bigger. You need to live with a bike, a test ride only tells you so much. You should speak to owners as well but remember that opinions are like assholes and @Six30 is the smelliest asshole of all.
