  1. The first openly armed police I ever saw was at an airport, it seemed quite shocking at the time.
  2. About 20 years ago I was out and about in east London with my late boss Steve. An old man, with his head down, shuffled slowly past us, his clothes dirty, tattered and creased. Steve said quietly in my ear, "See him, he used to be the hardest bastard in the whole of east London, people would cross the street to avoid him, now look at him!" I fell for that, Steve did that every time he saw an old bloke shuffling about. He also used to say "But Dad, I love him" every time he saw a particularly tattooed scruff bag as well. But the point is, you see people wander past all the time and you will never know their life story or what they have gone though most of the time. Occasionally you will get to hear a small part of their life if you get to know them better.
  3. This is one of my 'take a picture looking directly into the sun' shots. You haven't a clue what you are looking at, you can't see the display, you are blinded temporarily......but the clever part of the image software always sorts it out and it usually looks nice. I did the same for some of the river shots.
  4. I keep telling those stupid Roman soldiers, remove the feet nails before the wrist nails.
  5. Another good one if you like a life story. You have to read the first article before you read the second one so you understand how Joseph expresses himself. https://spitalfieldslife.com/2022/03/03/milly-abrahams-dressmaker-x/ https://spitalfieldslife.com/2013/12/30/so-long-joseph-markovitch/.
  6. I didn't do the walk around the walls unfortunately, just up some steps to get my first picture along an empty bit. Mostly it was rammed with people and I wasn't in a fit state to be held up if I needed to get through fast. I hope to go back as there was a lot I missed. Very friendly local people.
  7. It's a beast as well.. The Railway Museum was a lovely place, but quite crowded, also difficult to get far enough away from anything to take a picture of the whole thing. I have not shown all the railway pictures to avoid it being too much. My mates stayed in the pub for this, I wandered over to it, walking gingerly and slowly. Cost me a pound to get in. Took some pictures of Mallard from above.
  8. Check out this window. Measure twice cut once springs to mind. Took this on the way home in a GREGGS services, all services oop North are a Greggs services it seems. I looked right as I walked back to the car. Check out the zoomed version
  9. The missing road had mostly reappeared by day 2.
  10. I'd have just said 'This MP died here, people were a bit sad'. But whoever wrote this was paid by the word it seems.
  11. As you may recall I started the journey with a slight case of the trots, so I lived in fear for the first day and a half. Regular visits to the pubs allowed me to take safety farts in the toilets so as not to require the walk of shame back to the rented house for a kecks change. FIRST CLASS CARRIAGE, Third class afterwards. You get a roof in first class but have to provide your own cushion by the look of it.
  12. Went to York for the weekend with some friends. They've had a bit of rain it seems, we had a bit of trouble getting close to the city due to whole roads shut by massive floods. Second picture down (if it doesn't do its usual trick of changing the order) shows a line of bollards where the road usually is. The opposite bank's road has disappeared altogether.
  13. I spotted two young boys standing in the street with no shoes on. I also now understand the comment made in Steptoe and Son when Albert is bemoaning the lack of father's name on his birth certificate and suggesting it may have been the Muffin Man who called round a lot because his mum cried when he died. Harold says that his Dad does have a very flat top to his head. https://spitalfieldslife.com/2022/03/01/charles-spurgeons-londoners-o/
  14. There are two old songs that got better for me when used in opening titles. This one and the one below:-
  15. You've got to look out for each other in this weather. I just checked on my 88 year old neighbour to see if she needed anything from the shops. It turned out that she did ...so I gave her my shopping list as well. No point in us both going out in this.
  16. It's true he let me sit on his pride and joy. I had to be lifted on it and then lifted off again afterwards, it was too high for me to manage on my own. This heartening anecdote has been brought to you by Carry On Ltd
  17. You're not catching me out twice. I typed all this a few weeks ago and it disappeared.
  18. This would definitely void his warranty. https://videos.dailymail.co.uk/video/mol/2022/02/15/8466404119318672604/1024x576_MP4_8466404119318672604.mp4
