Well, the obvious advantage for some vehicles, is that an airbox increases you fording ability, some KLRs probably put that to use. However, I think the clearest advantage of an airbox is that it makes it easier to have a better throttle response on lower rpms.

I could get an add on to the bike's screen or a bigger screen, but I love not having a big piece of plastic in front of me.

Well, my bike has a smaller than stock screen, so there is more air all over, I am not sure about more turbulence at motorway speeds but a lot more bugs hit my helmet than with the standard helmet. My problem with the Schuberth that I tried was that it shaked a lot more than my motocross helmet, which is a Shoei. The motocross helmet hasn't got that vibration, but is obviously a lot worse at catching air, not to mention there is no shield so there is a big hole catching air right there. I understand that a beak is never going to be ideal, but my question was about if there is any experience with one that is not so bad. I love a modular helmet, because I ride with it open on slow speeds and love the feeling of opening it up right before arriving somewhere on a hot day. I would get an open face but the idea of getting a stone right in my face on the motorway doesn't appeal. But the beak appeals for touring...

I would like a helmet with a beak for touring, mainly for protection agains the sun. Besides end of day low sun conditions when it's useful to avoid the glare from low sun, it's great to have a little shade on your face in really hot days. I've tried my Shoei motocross helmet on the GS and it's unbearable when cruising over 90kmh, it pulls up and all over the place. I've tried a Schuberth E1 and the beak makes it vibrate a whole lot, so much so that it made my vision blurred. This surprised me because I love my C3 Pro. I've got a smaller screen on the GS, and don't want to loose that. Is there any beaked helmet you have found to be aerodynamic on motorways up to 140kmh, or am I expecting too much of an impossible miracle?

I think he might only be famous to me around here, though. He's a mate, and is the fastest guy on a bike around the Nordschleife. I met Paulo Gonçalves once as well, a portuguese star who lost his life on the last Dakar.

the Honda dealer where I once bought my Transalp told me they got a few bikes with problems coming from Honda's assembling plant in Italy, most notably was a small utilitarian bike, CBF125?, they got one with absolutely no stickers, and another with no piston and conrod, took them a while to understand why it would not start but would crank like fuck ?

That's where I think we digress, you say it an image, I say people buy a feeling. It's worth it to feel like and adventurer, a racer, a badass biker, etc, even if you're just getting that feeling while going about your mundane life.

The GSs with dustbins that don't go anywhere serve a purpose, their owners look at their bikes and feel like they can go on an adventure, and basically that's why most people buy bikes. Most CBRs and GSXRs don't go on track either, it doesn't make them useless, their riders feel like Marc Marquez when they start them to go have a coffee with their friends.

On the other hand, you can go around the world and not find or have an adventure, and have an adventure when you´re commuting home from work or on the train. Traveling doesn't mean adventure, it just means traveling. The "adventure" part of the segment's name is just marketing. Big trail or trail mustn't have been a manly enough name for the american market, it worked well enough in Europe for decades.

I, for one, would like to test ride a big v-twin.
