It's not very often I turn back except when the road ends, I did today. This was just by Santarem which is the regional capital city. Santarém is right on top of a hill with a very high and nice view to the inland of Portugal and the Tejo river. There are obviously streets, roads and even motorways to go that way, but I somehow found myself on a very steep dirt road that had a very deep water carved trench right in the middle. I managed to wedge the front wheel on a rut to prevent it from slipping down and went to take a look by foot.

The dirt was sort of crumbling and I could really see myself slipping onto the middle rut, which was deep enough to wedge the cylinders and leave the front wheel in the air. Since that was what I was picturing it was probably what was going to happen, so slowly put the bike down, turned it 90º and back I went with my tail between my legs.

You made the right move there Pedro 👍not sure I would be so sensible though. You’d probably find my skeleton trapped under the bike with the word fuck scratched into the dirt next to it

Nothing dramatic like that would happen, it would just be stuck and a pain in the ass to take out. A proper bore on a warm day. I do like it too, and would rather not drag it out of a hole :classic_laugh:

Wise decision @Pedro on a bike as big as yours 👍

Photoshopped for dramatic effect.

Today, firstly stopping to put a mid layer on, as it was quite chilly up there, photo ruined by the power lines:

IMG_1229.thumb.jpeg.07ec52d5b99cd94b0a4d90b4165a9250.jpeg

Then, after a particularly loose and uphill bit, stopped to check google maps if this had an exit on the other side or if I had to go back down the same way and contemplate my life choices

No dramatic descents were needed, and after 25 or so km it ended in a pretty dirt road through a forest.

The highlight of that detour was a close encounter with a deer, running beside my bike at about 20 meters distance. To be fair the GS was riding on easier surfaces than the low shrubs he was running on.

I don't think there are any dirt roads in the UK that are anywhere near 25km's long that are legal to ride now

Those had signs pointing to them, an observatory in the middle of which the access is through those roads. There are plenty of places like that here, I hope the abuse by some people who treat them like a rally raid stage doesn't make that end.
