Nice one Fred!

I looked at the first bit with the engine and I thought......

I really like the look of your local dirtroad.

What did you end up replacing in that engine, afterall?

And that lake, it’s amazing!

Thanks @Pedro The lake is one of a series of reservoirs that feed the valleys with drinking water i think i get my water from there, as for the dog i had the cylinder honed and a new set of rings even though it was all new 22000 miles ago, i was so close to it i would have regretted it if i didn't do it, the essential work was the 2 new cam chain guides and new cam chain all Honda parts. Total cost for parts was £358 about £100 of that was gaskets. Doing it myself saved me about 2 days of labour which would be about a £1000. if i had to pay someone to do it i would probably have parted out the bike as i only bought it for £800 about 12 years ago

Well, in fairness it probably has increased in value over your ownership?

Do you feel it’s stronger now?

Performance wise It feels about the same as before but without the clattering, it is smoother through the gears, throttle feels more responsive and is not stumbling when ticking over. Its more likely to have decreased in value during my ownership, would be worth a lot more if it was a standard bike, The only increase in value is my personal attachment to it which has just gone up again LOL

How'd you get on with front sprockets Fred? My first engine had the early out put shaft and had worn badly. I was using Africa twin sprockets as they has a shoulder.
The new shafts are no better either.

Front sprocket shaft has a small amount of wear but not a lot. when i use up the sprockets i have on the shelf i will be looking to fit one of these i got one on my old Africa twin
A bit pricey but easier than an engine rebuild. The XR has a lot more wear i'm in the process of doing some mods on that to see if i can prolong it

Mine arrived today and it's now fitted. Should of checked the bike first as it had a 14t on the front and 40 rear.
Guess I'll be getting a new chain and rear sprocket now.

How much wear is on the splines or are you putting it on to prevent it

Prevention. There is some but like I said, I'd adapted a wider sprocket and it's worked well but now a few years old.

I've just nocked something up for the XR there's more wear on the shaft than i like so looked at making something to use all the shaft. I ended up annealing the old sprocket cutting the teeth off and then turning it down to the same diameter as the sprocket retainer. Then i drilled and tapped the sides so a grub screw would tighten down into the groove the sprocket retainer normally sits in. The JT sprockets got a shoulder on them that normally faces out i turned it around so it faces in so you have to push it onto the unused part of the shaft to get it to line up with the chain and with the modified sprocket re hardened and bolted to it it ends up covering all the shaft. I did use a chemical metal as i pushed the sprocket on to build up the worn part of the shaft so it's not just the new part of the shaft taking the strain. I've put about 500 miles on it now and everything seems good. the four screws around the sprocket are just there to cap off the grub screws and to keep the crap out

Had to give the shaft a scrap and still had to give the new sprocket a few taps to get it all the way home. It's def using all the spline available.

The boys on the TDM forum have stopped using JT front sprockets as they're already a bit of a loose fit on the output shaft from new.

I have to use the JT ones as the standard sprocket wouldn't work with my mod on the XR, the chemical metal stops any movement its on there solid, i have been wondering how it will come off when it needs to but ill worry about that next sprocket change

Give it a clout with a council screwdriver if it doesn't budge then use a bigger one till it does
