Today I have to weld holes on the 650,  last time i was out the headers started blowing since it was recently rebuilt  i just thought it was something settling in so nipped up the bolts which fixed it, later on one of the lads i was out with flagged me down to say my exhaust was bouncing about it wasn't the headers settling in i had lost a bolt holding the silencer on and that bouncing about had worked loose the header pipes. so me being clever just got some fence wire and held it up with that for the rest of the ride when i got home the bouncing about had chewed up the rusty metal and made a proper hole for me to sort out 

So far I've Cut out a nice new plate and made a spacer for the exhaust mounting bolt to attach

Ready for welding

Spacer welded in place

A dry run to see how it fits

 

Back to the shed now to make the inner plate then i have some serious cleaning of the frame to get all the paint off ready for welding

That's the only area rust has got a grip of the ends of the boxed in bit are open so all the crap has got trapped in there holding water going to pour some rust killer in there and after its dry loads of chain lube

In-between riding and washing bikes today i done a job on the dog I've been meaning to do for years. The side stand sits horizontal and when riding through deep ruts with rocks in it gets pushed against the swing arm, you can see the piece of plastic i cable tied on there to protect the swing arm in the photo below and also the wear on the foot of the side stand where its been dragging on rocks.
I ground the side stand stop until the stand moved above the swing arm out of the way like it is on dirt bikes and shortened the spring a little and blowing up my induction heater in the process i think i will replace it with a better one as it's really handy. 

While i was at it i welded a disc to the foot of the side stand to stop it sinking in soft ground something i had done in the past but had to cut it off when i found out it was hitting the swing arm and then applied a nice lick of paint to finish it off.

I got the long hooked end red hot with the induction heater and just rolled the hook down until it was a circle with a long nosed pliers and then trimmed it off with a disc cutter to make it a hook again if that makes sense and then dipped it in water to cool it down so the hook wouldn't be soft and stretch out. It needs to be a little shorter but the induction heater went bang so i just found a spring the right length on line and ordered that

Last night i decided to change the swing arm on the Dog as there's a few holes in it again and i'm fed up of welding it. I 've had a good swing arm kicking around for about 5 years

when i took the old one off i remembered why i hadn't changed it sooner, its because one of the bolts is seized in the collar it goes through, when i discovered this years ago the bearings were good so i fitted a grease nipple in there to keep them good. I decided to bite the bullet and cut the mounting bracket off but before i done that i had a look how much a new bolt and collar is in case its some ridiculous price, but not too bad the collar is £9.48 plus vat but the bolt is discontinued 
Parts 11 and 16 i'm after 

So the job is to at least save the bolt i put a shit load of heat on it but no joy so ended up welding the collar to a steel plate so i could hold it in the vice and with a large power bar it moved and eventually came out 

When i'd finished last night and sat down to order the parts i needed i discovered the collar is also discontinued fuck twat fuck i now have a dead dog in my garage

 

if only i knew someone with a lathe

The bolt is still available from CMS but they only have one left ..........

I'm surprised that the swing arm has rotted out but if you do manage to mount the new one I would drill some holes in it to let the water escape.  I did this on my KTM950

Thanks Bob but you forget i have a lathe that was my attempt at being funny  I managed to save the bolt and i have just ordered some ground silver steel rod to make one. It has rotted out because i think water got in through the holes that the screws for the chain slider use as their only self tappers, it was full of water when i took it off so the new one will definitely have holes in the bottom and will be filled with wax oil or something similar before fitting

The bolt is never going to be an issue, in fact I would replace that anyway with something made of marine stainless.

 

I get bolts and fasteners here.

My bit of silver steel turned up today, It's the correct diameter and has a ground surface so no work to be done on that

Just a 12mm hole to drill through i started off with the centre drill

And then the pilot hole 

8mm hole 

And final size 12mm

easy job really except for my fucking cock up can you spot it. Took it out of the chuck to mark its length then put it back in to cut it but i put it in the other way around so started to cut it the wrong side of the line FFS lots of swearing at myself when realised but luckily its outside the oil seal fucking cock FFS. 

Time to harden it up 

Needs plenty of heat and then a swish around in some water the swishing is important

I tested the edge of it with a file to see if it was hard and the file wouldn't touch it it's as hard as glass just needs a polish now

The finished product, that groove is fucking me off though, i will have to see how much sleep i lose over it to see if i make another LOL.
