Snodhill Castle

When I was out last year near Arthur's Stone I thought I glimpsed a castle through the trees on my way there.  I got back home and did some investigation and found out it was called Snodhill castle and had only recently been 'discovered' , I'm sure the locals always knew it was there but some bods had taken it upon themselves to reveal it to one and all.  So as I couldn't go off camping I decided to go and have a look.

My route took me past White Castle on the way and there is a 'White Road' near it (we call them white roads as that's how they appear on OS maps).  I had tried to ride this previously from the castle end but was questioned by some walkers who told me it was a footpath.  Today I rode it from the bottom end and as I suspected it is most likely not a footpath at all but a UCR (unclassified county road).  You can clearly see the old tarmac surface in places but it seems that someone definitely doesn't want vehicles on it as I came across some cut down trees which had been conviniently left across the road 🙄

Anyway, I carried on and stopped at White castle to have a coffee from my flask..........

The weatherman had got it wrong as it was supposed to be overcast but there was some glorious sunshine, here's the donkey basking in a rape seed field................

So after finishing my coffee and watching the Ravens flying about the castle I set off for Snodhill.  It was a bit of a trek up to the castle and the sign at the bottom gave you some advice..................

I took the  'less slippery route '  as I wanted to actually get to the top.  You can see that the trust has done a lot of work to reveal the castle on some very dodgy ground...............

There were some big chunks of wood lying about showing the size of the some of the trees they had to cut down, my boot is for comparison .............

It was time for another coffee so I sat on a bench, it was great vista and very quiet which suited the surroundings................

Suitably refreshed I made an assault up the the tower, you can see why this castle was built here as from the top you get a 360 degree view of the surrounding countryside..........

It was a pleasant journey back home as well down some lovely back roads made all the better by the fact that I managed to dodge several big showers and arrived home dry :classic_cool:

Excellent Bob!

You recovered enough to do all that walking though?

Yes, it wasn't too bad Pete , there was a bit of coughing and spluttering but the surroundings were really encouraging  :littleguy:
