boboneleg Posted October 8, 2023 Share Posted October 8, 2023 So about a month ago I came across this bike for sale, I'll admit that this model was not on my radar at all but after going to have a look at it I bought it there and then. No matter how good a secondhand bike is there are usually some things you need to address , whether that be personal preference or something not working quite right. I have bought this bike primarily for trail riding , it probably won't be a dual purpose bike like my CRF250 Rally was as the Donkey can fulfill that role. So with that in mind there were some things it needed to be right for me. First and foremost was a change of handlebars as the O/E bars were too narrow and not high enough so a Pro-Taper CR High was ordered along with some SW Motech 20mm risers and Acerbis X-Factor hand guards...... The O/E bars were stripped of their belongings ................... and the new items fitted. It all went together without too much fuss...................... and then some Oxford Advanced heated grips were fitted............... 4 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

boboneleg Posted October 8, 2023 Author Share Posted October 8, 2023 Next up I needed a rack so I had somewhere to carry tools, tubes, tyre levers etc. There wasn't a great deal of choice so in the end I opted for some Chinesium from Ali Express.............. Fitting this required the removal and drilling of the rear mudguard. Very kindly Yamaha saw fit to mark where you had to drill on the underside of the guard .................... Then the spacers (supplied) were added to line up with the subframe.............. Two of the supplied bolts were not quite long enough to facilitate a locking nut underneath so I ordered some 10mm longer stainless bolts and then it was done ................ 6 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

boboneleg Posted October 8, 2023 Author Share Posted October 8, 2023 The last thing on the list was to fit my GPS mount. I tried to find a spare connector with a switched live for a power feed but the loom is quite spartan for a road legal bike. In the end I decided to tap into the side light wiring with some posi-taps and then managed to find room on the bars to position the mount .............. While i was looking for power I noticed that the headlight was not working. After testing the bulb holder and switch gear I traced the fault back to the headlight relay. Mr Yamaha would like to releive you of £83.68 for that part but a rummage through the stores in work came up with an indentical relay from Signor Ducati and after fitting that the headlight was fine ................. The first thing I noticed was the number plate light was loose so I set about that first. I looked behind the rear mudguard to find the fasteners and they were real cruddy and sure enough they both snapped off. That was no biggy but the fact that they were seized in the ferrules that they sit was a pain but I managed to punch them out ............... I cleaned the area up a bit and then tried to find something to replace the shitty stuff ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, You know when you find something and it's just perfect, well this was the day. I must have bought these over 15 years ago as I bought them to replace some items I had on my last Africa Twin............ a bit of red rubber grease around the grommets and then they were in .............. and that was that job done ...................... 7 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Out came the rear wheel, the tyre was removed and the culprit was revealed ............ The valve had come free of the tube, that explains the instant deflation. On inspection the area around the valve hole was showing signs of corrosion. Not great on a set of wheels that are only 15 months old The rim tape was also destroyed from riding 7 miles on a flat tyre............... I found that one of the footrest springs was missing and I really didn't like the gear lever as it was very cruddy. New stuff arrived this week............. The bolt on the gear lever didn't give up without a fight , it needed heat, WD-40 and a long breaker bar to free it............... So the airbox has a flap inside it which is vacuum controlled by a unit sat on top of the box , the unit has a hook on the end which pulls the flap up to let more air in when needed. Here I have taken it out and blanked off the hose with a screw............... Then I put some double-sided tape under the flap and secured it so it is fully open all the time................. and that's it , job done. The bike should breathe better now with the new silencer and servo motor removed. Same mod used for the TDM900s, made no difference starting but did help some with the low rev stutter.
