Personally my favourite is a single cylinder 600-650cc

I've had quite a few bikes with this type of engine and for my type of riding I love them.

I haven't got much experience with owning lots of bikes, but just from having tried a few I prefer two cylinder engines for normal road bikes, in V and flat. I really like how a boxer is both smooth and torquey at low and medium rpms but also sounds great at full throttle in higher rpms. I used to like my Transalp 650, it was happy being revved but felt and sounded like it would last forever, if that is even possible to get from the sound at tickover :classic_laugh:, still love the distinct smooth sound an old Africa Twin or a Varadero makes.

I liked the engine in the VFR.

But some jobs to do on it were a right pain.

I'm right there with ya Bob.... had more fun on those types of bikes! Had a V4, & (4) IL4's, a Vtwin & a handful of singles both 2T & 4T....never had a triple, but I love the exhaust note they put out....

I have a 270 degree Parallel twin and a inline four.  Love both  but I do look back fondly on the 3 BMW boxer twins I had in the past.  Had a triple several parallel twins, singles and fours.    Never had an inline V twin but had a Parallel V Twin.

At the moment I love the Twin in my Hornet lots of bang for what it is. So probably twins for me.

It all depends on what you’re doing at the time, mind you I’ve done some daft things with what could be considered an inappropriate bike.

For example, I did a track day at Donnington Park on my bog standard Hayabusa, went touring on my XR650L across to the old East Germany, down through the Czech Republic, Italy (including wazzing it up and down the Stelvio Pass), Austria, Switzerland and France and also rode a naked muscle bike from Prague to Weston Super Mare in one hit covering about 1000 miles in the process.

……I’ve heard it said that you can’t beat the hit of a big in-line four but for me it has to be a single for off road and a big fuck-off twin for everything else. 🤣

I like all engines and can't really pin it down to one i like the most but i can't get my head around a triple in an adventure bike, for some reason my head won't accept that and the old parallel twin engines were as boring as rice cakes are tasteless before the 270 deg crank was invented. The gear driven cam VFR 750 engine was a fantastic engine and well overengineered i really liked that, just shows how good you can build something when your making up for your previous fuck up LOL.

Mandis had 4 inline 4s and I've enjoyed giving them a hard time as she doesn't. Singles and twins for me, but then I got a triple.:classic_blink:
