Shadow RTA

Well been a stressful day so far.   Had a phone call this morning that Shadow had been knocked off her bike.  About 100 yards down the road from home.   Terrified I ran down the road to find her up and about.    A woman had pulled out of her driveway and clipped Shadow and skittled her off, then oblivious drove off.    The crash was witnessed by a nurse from across the street and heard by a friend.    By the time I got there the nurse had checked Shadow over who was unharmed but a little scuffed and shook up.   I got the woman’s husband out who rang her and called her back.  She was very apologetic and admitted full liability.   In the mean time her husband brought up his CCTV and found footage of the accident.   Clearly she forced Shadow off the road and off the bike.
Now I will add at this point I have known this couple for over 30 years and they are decent people.
The husband asked me what I wanted to do.   I said that as long as the damaged was paid for I didn’t need it escalated any further than that.
Anyway, after it had all calmed down, I took the bike for a ride, mechanically it rode perfectly so the damage was only broken plastic.   Very expensive broken plastics but only cosmetic.
I got the bike stripped and found the actual damage.   Called the husband who immediately came and paid for the parts, plus new leggings and crash helmet.  £910 in total.
Just waiting for the parts now and she will be back on the road.    All genuine Honda parts.
I am pleased that things have been sorted and very thankful that Shadow is okay, don’t know how I would have coped if she was seriously hurt.   I know I could have pursued the woman, police,  insurance claims and such but don’t see the point.   Shadow is okay and everything will be replaced with new parts.

Shit can happen and everyone can have a moment of distraction. It’s how you deal with it after that matters, if nobody’s hurt. Glad that they are still good neighbours, and hope she took sometthing from it and didn’t get scared.

First off I'm really pleased that Shadow is ok and didn't suffer any broken bones 👍

Secondly it looks like you have some very decent neighbours as that would definitely been a write off had it gone through insurance.

Let's hope Shadow will continue to ride her bike and have much better luck .

I didn't want to go through insurance unless I had no choice.   Even though it would not have been Shadows fault it would still have gone down on her insurance record at 17.   Also as you say the bike would have written off for the sake of 4 plastic panels and a screen.    The prices for those parts is exorbitant, blatantly a rip off in my opinion.  The bottom speedo casing slone was £99 FFS.   But what can you do apart from build an ugly street fighter/cafe racer type thing.  Not something she would like or me.   She likes having the best, newest, cleanest CB125F in the college car park.  🤣

Also the woman didn't want to go through insurance unless she had to as her excess was £500 and next years premium would have gone up.  Plus I didn't push it, but she did leave the scene of an accident.

On the plus side Shadow is basically fine, if a bit sore, she can't wait to be back on the road.  She is tough, has been thrown off horses many times in her young life .    I will be getting busy with the super glue to get her back up and running while we are waiting for the new parts to come.    I did chide her a little as she was going a little fast when it happened, only 15 MPH but still to fast to stop when the woman pulled out in front of her.   I told her I had seen video of the whole thing. Definitely not Shadows fault  but a little more caution would have probably avoided the whole thing.  I may be being a little over critical but I have years of experience and you can't expect her to get that overnight.  🙂

I did take her and her mum out for posh coffee and cake to chill after the event, but she is fine, up her boy friends now.

On a bike, being right and blameless doesn’t unhurt you after crashing. That’s a good lesson to learn early and without being hurt.

Absolutely it's almost like you heard what I said to her. 🤣

Glad she is okay, it's a learning curve. The woman driver needs a slap though, I bet she knew fine well she had hit someone.

I first thought that, but judging by her reaction I'm not so sure.  She is a Japanese woman and very honest and was very very upset about what happened so I genuinely don't know.    I chose to believe she didn't, for my temper and sanity.  Not sure I could say the same if Shadow was injured.  But we are where we are and things turned out as well as they could.  😐

Glad that the Shadow is OK. 👍

It is not a situation I have been in when my daughter was zipping about on 2 wheels, so we'll done for how you and your neighbours handled the situation, not sure how I would handled it.

Maybe not. 😂

Hope Shadow is back to riding soon, with the riding knowledge that will help her avoid any similar events in the future.

Glad she is OK, and hope this hasn't knocked her confidence.

That your kid has been knocked off must be about the worst think you can hear as a parent, can't have been much fun for you either.

Take it has a good lescen learned without injuries..

I imagine you've already had the talk about cars pulling out of drives ..even if you think they've seen you and even made eye contact...clutch  pulled ...ready on the brakes ...?

As stated earlier....Lesson well learned-- & w/ NO injuries...BIG plus.++👍 You've definitely got some decent neighbors there. Now Shadow can further her biking experience by helping Dad re-assemble her steed. She's quite blessed to have Dad's experience @ hand for a resource. 👌

Got rid of the Bambi sticker at least.

Shush, I haven't mentioned replacing that 🤣 and she hasn't either.  She made me smile yesterday as I was talking to her about getting the bike back together with the broken plastics glued and patched up until the new parts are here.  She is having none of that 🤣.  She wants to wait for the new parts and for it to be right.   I didn't say anything I don't mind her being off the road for the next few days given the way the weather is, one less worry.
